interTwin @ EGI2025

EGI2025: wrapping up the interTwin project in Santander, Spain (June 2-6, 2025)

EGI2025 was the closing event of interTwin. With two more months to go until the project ends on August 31 2025, now was the time to show all achievements of the projects. Not only did we host the plenary session on Thursday June 5th, but interTwin also acted as the moderator for the session collecting all Digital Twin talks from the EGI2025 Call for Proposals. Furthermore, we hosted a business model workshop, presented two interTwin posters, and were present in the EGI shared exposition booth. Last but not least, our resident interTwin podcaster made use of the fact that all interTwin partners were present for the conference and the closed project meeting on Friday to record a series of podcasts focused on the interTwin modules and use cases, that will be released on our YouTube channel over the next weeks. Finally, we presented the latest version of our interTwin summarising clip – capturing the project in 100 secs!

Plenary Session: Digital twins in science and the data & compute continuum: achievements of the interTwin project

This conference session presented the key achievements of the interTwin project, which developed a Digital Twin Engine to support the next generation of digital twins for science. Participants explored how the project enabled interdisciplinary collaboration by co-designing digital twin prototypes across climate, energy, and other research domains. The session also examined pathways for integrating the interTwin framework into diverse Research Infrastructures and international scientific initiatives to accelerate digital twin adoption.

The conference session began with Andrea Manzi (EGI) setting the stage by providing the context of Digital Twins. Following this, Anabela Oliveira (LNIC) shared insights into building user-centered Coastal Digital Twins, drawing from the experiences and challenges faced in the CONNECT and WOLLF projects. Thomas Geenen (ECMWF) then discussed the interoperability of the DestinE ecosystem and its support for the scientific community. Isabel Campos (CSIC) presented the technical outcomes of the project, focusing on the interTwin Digital Twin Engine. Charis Chatzikyriakou (EODC) followed with a discussion on the scientific outcomes, including thematic modules and use cases. The session concluded with Xavier Salazar (EGI) exploring the future directions and next steps for the project.

Digital Twins in Action: Scalable Models for Science

This session, grouping presentations selected from the EGI2025 Call for Proposals, on June 5, 2025, showcased the growing impact of digital twin technologies across various scientific domains. The talks demonstrated how modular, AI-powered digital twins enable real-time insights and cross-domain innovation.

Presentations included the Momentum European Project, which focuses on developing a digital twin for emissions monitoring and energy management in Madrid, and a discussion on cloud-based computational workflows using OSCAR and DCNiOS to improve data management and application delivery. Additionally, the session featured talks on a three-dimensional digital twin use case for better data-driven decision-making, identifying transient signals in real-time, and GlitchFlow, a digital twin for managing transient noise in gravitational wave interferometers. The event also covered the use of digital twins for detecting and characterizing climate extremes using deep learning and introduced the European Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO), aimed at making ocean knowledge accessible for decision-making.

Assessment of impact across projects (interTwin Impact Driven Workshop)

Assessing the impact of a project is not only limited to the scientific advances but also economic and societal benefits are very important. The European Commission has developed a Key Impact Pathways methodology that helps to assess the socio-economic impact of research projects and programmes at large, but there are a number of methodologies. During this workshop, different approaches around the assessment of impact of research activities, and experiences from different projects such as iMagine and EuroScienceGateway, together with interTwin, showed the impact achieved through these different methodologies.

interTwin podcast recordings

Throughout the conference, Diego Ciangottini (CERN) recorded several episodes of his SciGeeks Universe podcast with interTwin project partners discussing their work. Follow our interTwin YouTube channel for the episodes to appear!

Posters

Two interTwin-themed posters were featured at the conference:

Closed project meeting

On Friday June 6th, interTwin had its final technical meeting – reviewing the work done, finalising the last activities, planning for future follow up and collaborations, and preparing for the final review.
